How to cook whole chicken in Slow cooker?
Making your own rotisserie style chicken at home is super simple. One of my favorite ways to make a whole chicken is in my slow cooker. Make the entire roasting chicken tucked right in there is so easy. In a crock pot, whole chicken is slow cooked to perfection. Meat stays tender and soft, never dries out and keeps all the flavors.
All you need to do is rub seasoning mix in chicken skin. Then arrange balls of aluminum foil on the bottom of slow cooker and place whole chicken on top, cover with the lid and cook for a few hours. It takes about 4 hours on high or 7-8 hours on low. Cooking time depending on size of chicken you use and the brand of your slow cooker. So, cook until the chicken is tender and reach an internal temperature of 165°F. That way you’ll get delicious, fall of the bone chicken, that stays moist and tender keeping all the juiciness and flavors.
Perfectly seasoned chicken in slow cooker tastes like it’s fresh off the rotisserie. Seasoning mix gives chicken slow-roasted flavor and golden appearance without using a rotisserie. If you want a crisper skin you can broil chicken in the oven for 5 minutes, but it so delicious even without this extra step.

Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken (about 4 lbs.)- neck and giblets removed
- 1 teaspoon chili powder

- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt (more or less-to taste)

- Serve the chicken as desired.
- If you want crispier skin, place the chicken on a baking sheet and broil for 3-5 minutes.

Has anyone made graveyard from the drippings?
Jana,
Haha, graveyard! Pretty sure that was spellcheck’s answer to gravy 😉
[…] Since all chickens, crockpots, and cooks are different, I used a recipe as a loose guide for timing and an initial game plan but besides that I kind of just did my own thing. With the purpose of not taking all of the credit since I did not magically think of this way of cooking a chicken first, here is the link for the original recipe: slow-cooker-rotisserie-chicken. […]

Thanks Bonnie! I’m glad that yo like it!
This is an easy no brainer recipe. I followed the directions and yes, when it’s done it will fall apart when you try and pick up the whole chicken.. I took the opportunity to take it apart in pieces I would serve. I put them in an aluminum pan and baked it a few minutes to get a golden color ( as suggested by the recipe’s creator)- Wow! It’s a beautiful meal you can have weekday – no trouble at all. Thanks.
Thanks Tanya!
I made this for dinner tonight and couldn’t believe how tender and flavourful this was. It also made delicious gravy.
Thanks Joanne!
Can I also fill the chicken ?

Do you use a frozen chicken or thawed?
Hi Lacey, use thawed chicken.
I’m a vegetarian but my boyfriend is not so I’m always trying to find recipes which are hard to screw up because I can’t go about tasting it throughout the process. I tried this recipe out last weekend and did the 8-hour method. I even used a 7lb chicken instead of a 4lb one so I did double the spices. It fell right off the bone and my boyfriend happily ate the whole thing over the course of the next week. This was a very helpful way to make sure everyone got fed at my house. He said it was very delicious and that he would want me to make it again.
Yumm! Has anyone tried this with chicken breast instead of the whole chicken in the slow cooker??
TIA!
What size slow cooker do you recommend? Thank you.

Absolutely delicious. This is the third time I’ve made this 🙂 Thank you!
Made this recipe today with a 5-lb. chicken and it turned out terrific. Was done in about 7 hours on low in my crockpot, and then was kept on warm until dinnertime. So simple. 🙂
A 5-Star for sure! I keep coming back to this recipe time and again! Yum!
So simple and delicious! Perfect for summer when you don’t want to use the oven.
Absolutely delicious!
Delicious! A little trick I used was to place the chicken on whole peeled carrots instead of on the tin foil balls. I then have cooked carrots to accompany my chicken. I use this method when I am roasting a chicken instead of using a rack.
Oh Yeah! As a matter of fact, I have plans for baking my Lemon Baked Chicken for Sunday’s dinner. My wife is making a cheesy rice, with Broccoli! She makes this dish using cheese whiz, broc florets, uncle ben’s rice, sliced Hillshire sausage, butter and baked for about 30 minutes in a pre-heated oven (350 degrees). We’ll have the chicken with it! Looking forward to both of these delicious entrees!
