Description
These homemade Chocolate Peanut Butter Christmas Trees are just like your favorite Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups disguised as a fun and festive Christmas dessert!
Ingredients
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter
- ¼ cup unsalted butter-melted
- 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 10–12 oz. chocolate chips or chocolate chopped in small pieces (I used half of semi-sweet and half of milk chocolate )
Instructions
- Line 8 x 8 inch dish with parchment paper, leaving the paper overhang the sides so you can easily lift it later and set aside.
- Then in a mixing bowl stir together peanut butter, melted butter, brown sugar vanilla and salt, until sugar dissolve. Next, gradually mix in powdered sugar.
- Press the mixture into prepared dish. Smooth the top with spatula or simply press it with your palms to flatten into about ½ inch thick layer.
- Place it in the freezer until firm enough for cutting.
- When the mixture is firm enough, line a tray with parchment paper and set aside.
- Using Christmas tree cookie cutter cut out the trees and place them on the tray. Place them in the freezer for 45-60 minutes until completely firm.
- Then melt the chocolate and line another tray with parchment paper.
- Using a fork, dip each tree into melted chocolate to cover completely. Gently tap the fork to drip of the excess of chocolate. (Since the peanut butter mixture softens really fast at the room temperature, I suggest you to take just a few trees at the time from the freezer, because it’s easier to work with the firm trees!!!) Place chocolate covered Christmas trees on the parchment paper lined tray. Refrigerate until chocolate has set.
- Store in the fridge or freeze for longer storage.
- I made 18 Christmas trees, but the number depends on the size of your cookie cutter. Mine was about 1 ¾ x 2 ¼ inches. Don’t waste any batter, pick up leftovers, kneed, press with your palms and you will be able to cut out at least 2-3 more trees.

Could you use coconut oil instead of butter for vegans?
Hi Denise, I think it would work, too. Please let me know if you try with coconut oil!
There were issues with trying to print the recipe so I had to ‘copy & paste’, email it to myself and then print.
Issues: filled w/ads, would not completely load so I could print from your ‘print’ option.
Thanks so much for the recipe, this is my husbands favorite and I been making a similar recipe for years, thought I try something new (liked the way yours rolled out).
Thanks Terri:-)
These look delicious! Did you use natural peanut butter or peanut butter that has added sugar?
Hi Mel,use natural.
You should have specified that you are using natural peanut butter instead of just creamy peanut butter. I thought that was a lot of sugar to add. It was way too sweet and ruined the whole batch because I use regular peanut butter.
I have made this recipe twice now and they are fantastic. The only problem I have is getting the chocolate loose enough to dip properly, is there a secret to melting the chips? (I used milk chocolate chips only.)
Thanks Barbara 🙂 I’m glad you like it.
Try to heat the chocolate to just a bit higher temperature, but be careful not to burn it.
I add shortening or coconut oil to my melted chocolate. This helps to thin it out for dipping.
Can you use baked peanut butter cookies?
Try melting it in a double boiler. Or get a pan of hot water, then get another smaller pan and put in the hot water. And put your chocolate inside the second pan.
Barbara. . .I always add in a little canned chocolate frosting to the chips. About a 1/2 can to a full bag of semi sweet chips.
How long can you store in the freezer?
Hi Liz, you can store it for a few weeks, even a month.
My chocolate was to thick to dunk them, I had to just spread chocolate on top, really bummed me out!
Hi Julie, I’m really sorry to hear that!
For anyone that has issues with chocolate being too thick, you can always add a little coconut oil and it will thin the chocolate a bit, butter if you can’t do coconut.
Can you use salted butter?
HI Barb, you can use salted butter and omit the salt in the recipe.

Love this recipe! My kids want to make them for their classmates for Valentine’s Day. How long can you freeze them for without losing quality?
Hi Heidi, it will be good for a few weeks!
The recipe says to use powdered sugar what is the equivalent in the UK
Hi Janet, powdered sugar is confectioners sugar.
Icing sugar! Not confectioners is the equivalent:)

I recently made these and found they had a weird after taste, possibly from the powdered sugar. Anyone else have this issue? Other than that, we thought they were great!

Can I use the chocolate discs that I used making peanut butter balls?
Hi Jan, you can use them.
Are you trying to kill me?? I could eat my weight in these things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two cups of powdered sugar seems like a lot of sugar, along with the brown sugar. Why so much? Can they bemade with half that amount of sugar?
Hi Florence, if you want to cut down the sugar, you’ll have to use graham cracker crumbs instead or the mixture won’t set.
Graham cracker crumbs instead of what? The peanut butter?
I only used 1 cup powdered sugar and it turned out fine.

I wonder how I could make this sugar free.
Hi Angela, powdered sugar sweetens the candies and make the mixture thick, but you can use other sweetener and add ground sugar-free cracjers to make it thick.
Could I use peanut butter I made in my vitamix which is nothing but roasted peanuts? Will it hold together enough for these and also will it interfere with the chocolate staying firm?
Thanks
Hi Neil, sorry, can’t help you with that.
To make this sugar free, it had been suggested to use ground sugar free crackers for thickness? How much? What kind of cracker?
Hi was wondering how long do I leave them in freezer for to know they are firm enough? And powdered sugar or regular sugar?
Hi Christina, use powdered sugar.
Okay thank you! For step 4 how long would u say to leave in freezer for,for them to be firm enough?
How long do I leave them in freezer for to know they are firm enough? Regular sugar or actual powdered sugar?
Tips for dipping these in chocolate? Mine did not tolerate the fork method well. Also, specific directions for melting the chocolate? Mine lost their tree shape after dipping. Taste is good, but rather a disaster.
I like good recipes
I saw this recipe on Facebook, and without reading the caption, I imagined that these were some kind of chocolate-dipped pumpkin pie bites… which, to be honest, sounds kinda awesome!
we made these and my kids loved the inside with out the chocolate dipping lol
I tried making these last week and my peanut mixture was very dry and crumbly. I followed the directions as directed. Maybe I need to cut back on the powered sugar? Any ideas? I would love to try this again for my family Christmas.
EPIC FAIL!!! So disappointed!!
After chilling, they broke while coming out of cookie cutter. So pressed the batter thinner.
Then, chocolate was too thick….. really should have read comments first. This was auto be EASY.
Sounds delish. Nutrition info would be helpful
My mixture turned out waaaay too dry. I used kraft smooth peanut butter and followed the recipe exactly. Any tips?
After failing miserably on my first attempt, I read somewhere to use NATURAL peanut butter. I also used only about 1.5 cups of the Icing sugar and thinned out the chocolate with a bit of coconut oil. I used toothpicks to help with dipping the small sized peanut butter trees. My family is in love with them now, a few said they hadn’t tasted something this good in a long time! I made them into bite sized mini trees at Christmas (I got about 36) and plan to surprise them with mini hearts for Valentines day. There are definitely some key tips/instructions missing from this recipe but after some trial and error, they are amazing!
