Easy Honey Sesame Chicken Recipe
Have you ever seen the movie „Forget Paris“ with Debra Winger and Billy Crystal? I always loved the part when Ellen (Debra) goes crazy about the fact that Mickey (Billy Crystal) always eats the same dish in restaurants! I can’t exactly remember what dish it was, but the scene always reminded me about how my husband wondered about why I always order my favorite Honey Sesame Chicken in every restaurant!
„I can’t believe it. You ordered Honey Sesame Chicken again!“ my husband was perplexed once more after we ordered the dish in our favorite restaurant.
„No, not „again“. Don’t you remember that I ordered that grilled dish the last time“
„Yes, but before that, you ordered your famous Honey Sesame Chicken twice and while you ordered the grilled dish, you were whining the whole time why you didn’t order the chicken last time“ my husband reminded me.
„Yes, but what can I do. I simply love that dish“ i concluded humbled.
„How come you never posted this recipe on your blog? “ was the next question.
„Well you know that I don’t like to post savory recipes often“
“Yeah, but this is not any recipe, this is your Honey Sesame Chicken ” he was playing around with me.
“Just make jokes, but don’t whine when I serve it in our kitchen in a few days. You will get what you asked for” I was already waving the finger at Darko 🙂
And so it was! Only a few days after our talk at the restaurant, I served my husband sweet revenge when he was hoping the least .
“Vera, what do we have for lunch today?” he asked after a hard day at work
“Your favorite pasta!”. My sweet revenge was ready.
But when my husband sat at the table, on it was beautiful Honey Sesame Chicken and I was laughing out of satisfaction.
“You got what you were asking for”. I was teasing him now.
But that didn’t have any affect on my husband, who attacked the chicken as soon as he sat at the table .
„Well it’s not really revenge. Did I ever say that I don’t like this dish? The only thing that was miraculous to me is how can somebody love it that much” he was smiling as the Honey Sesame Chicken was rapidly disappearing from the table 🙂

This looks SO good! I’ll be making this, this week
Can coconut oil be used in place of vegetable oil?
Love the recipes but am I the only one who gets the Giant close up pick on every single page?? Its about half way down the page, can hardly see the recipes>
I found this recipe on Pinterest and tried it tonight. The batter appears to be thick and fluffy in the picture with a coating of golden sauce. I followed the recipe to the letter, but the batter ended up being thin and crispy, and the sauce was very dark and overpowered with the taste of ketchup/soy. My husband liked the dish, but I was not impressed.
Horrible. Absolutely horrible. The Chili sauce and ketchup ruined it. I followed the recipe exactly. The chicken fried very nicely, but that sauce is a disaster. I threw it all away.
This is an amazing dish…absolutely remarkable..just that right mix of soy and honey blend make for some ‘good grubbing.’ The flavor is out of this world when combined with some thin stripped cole slaw. OMG!!!!
I ended up making a salad of the sorts with some of the leftover chicken pieces, sauce and cole slaw towards the end.
One of my favorite dishes.
Thanks Chris 🙂
I noticed others stated it was horrible…I left the chili sauce out of mine and didn’t use quite as much ketchup. It was too die for.
I fixed this for my family Monday night (3.23.2015) and we absolutely loved it! Followed the recipe, but I used Sriracha sauce (I don’t know if that’s the same as sweet chili sauce, ?) But it was delicious! We’re having it again tonight! I noticed the negative comments, all I have to say about that is… do your taste buds work? And you obviously missed something because this recipe is amazing.

I liked how tender the chicken was, however I didn’t really like the sauce. I too thought the chili sauce could be eliminated
I had to try this me and my family love Chinese food.. So when i say it knew i had to make it for Asian night.. The chicken is great once you fry it, it had has a very good crust to it. The sauce was not at all what i expected its way darker once you make it than it is on the picture.I had to add a little more brown sugar and i also and a favorite flavoring Honey Teriyaki sauce to take away some of the bitterness it had. All in all my family loved it just had to adjust the sauce a little.
Ok this was horrible. Stay clear. I did not get the puffy looking coating that the picture depicts. They turned out like chicken fingers. The sauce, bleh
I made this dish yesterday. It came out good, a bit too sweet though. But I received positive feedbacks to it 🙂
Thanks for sharing this receipe!
This was really good, and my kids liked it too!
Make sure you are using the “sweet chili sauce” from near the soy sauce, and not the “chili sauce” that is by the ketchup.
This honeybsesame chicken recipes is one of the best meals I have ever made! All 7 of us loved it! My daughter who found the recipe asked if I would make it when she comes home from college.
Thanks Rachelle,
I’m glad your family like it.
Yum!!!
Thank you,
D.
Fantastic! Loved it! I added heaps more honey but thank you for posting.
My chicken turned out to be the colour of soy sauce,. ….dark brown..why so?
How much vegetable oil?
I saw this on Pinterest and thought I’d give it a try. My family loved it! I actually skipped the marinate all together and did not coat chicken in the flour. Instead, I grilled the chicken in sesame oil with some salt and pepper, then after half way cooked, I added frozen broccoli and soy sauce. I made the sauce in a pot as directed while chicken cooked and followed the recipe with the exception of adding some red pepper flakes to kick it up a bit. After chicken and sauce was done, I poured sauce over chicken and broccoli and tossed, then served over jasmine rice. Recipe can easily be made gluten free by substituting soy sauce with tamari instead, just use half as much b/c it seems much more salty than regular soy sauce. Perfect and we will definitely have again soon!
I did the mistake of using soy sauce to marinate the chicken. It tainted it dark brown.
If you do this don’t use soy sauce, if you do just add a 1/4 teaspoon of soy sauce.
Too much ketchup. I think next time i will only use 2 tbsp of ketchup and 4 tbsp of honey and 4 tbsp of sweet chili sauce instead. After all, its called honey chicken not ketchup chicken.
Thank you for your tip! I used 5 tbsp honey, 4 tbsp sweet chili sauce and only 2 tbsp of ketchup and it turned out so yummy!!! I also used a fourth of the soy sauce so it wasn’t too salty. I don’t think it would have been this good the original way.
Delicious and so easy to make
Can you substitute tomato sauce for the ketchup? not even sure i can buy ketchup in Australia or if it is the same thing
Hi Jessica,you could use it.
This was a very good recipe! My family loved it and I will definitely make it again. The only problem I had was that for 4 chicken breasts, the ingredients weren’t enough. I had to double the marinade and breading, and quadrouple the sauce. (Although I had a lot of sauce left over after that!) Anyway thank you for the great recipe!!!
[…] Honey Sesame Chicken […]
I have made this recipe a few times and my kids love it! I think it is ok. Next time I will try the suggestion of using more honey than ketchup. I use low sodium soy sauce and chicken tenders instead of chicken breast. The tender work better.
This is not very nice. It tastes like chili and ketchup. Couldn’t even taste the honey.
I wish I read the other comments before I made it.
