Easy blueberry cobbler recipe with fresh or frozen blueberries and simple ingredients comes together with less than 10 minutes of prep. I love warm, comforting baked fruit desserts like my super easy peach cobbler, which is one of the most popular recipes on my blog for good reason. That peach cobbler is made with canned peaches, so it can be enjoyed year-round, just like this blueberry cobbler recipe.

In summer, you can use fresh blueberries, but this recipe works perfectly with frozen blueberries, too. You can make blueberry cobbler with frozen blueberries, and you don’t need to thaw frozen berries before baking, which makes this recipe even easier.

Why You’ll Love This Blueberry Cobbler Recipe

  • Simple ingredients – you only need a few basic ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, butter, and milk)
  • Fresh or frozen blueberries – this recipe works great with both
  • Quick and easy prep
  • No-fail – whisk, pour, top with fruit, and bake until golden and bubbly
  • Comfort food – Southern-style cobbler with baked fruit and simple, buttery, cake-like batter

Ingredients For Blueberry Cobbler

Simple ingredients for an easy blueberry cobbler with fresh or frozen blueberries
  • Blueberries – for this simple cobbler recipe, you can use fresh or frozen blueberries. If using frozen, do not thaw them first.
  • Sugar – granulated sugar goes into the batter and is also mixed with the blueberries. Sprinkle some coarse sugar over the top before baking.
  • Butter – melted in the pan, it keeps the batter from sticking and adds richness and amazing flavor. Use real butter, not margarine.
  • Flour – all-purpose flour works perfectly for this easy cobbler recipe.
  • Baking powder and salt – for structure and to balance the flavor.
  • Milk – I prefer whole milk for the cobbler batter, since the fat adds more flavor. You can use another type of milk if you prefer.
  • Vanilla extract – to enhance the flavor.

How To Make Blueberry Cobbler From Scratch

Preparing blueberries with sugar for an easy blueberry cobbler recipe
  1. Prepare the blueberries
    • In a bowl, toss the blueberries with sugar and set aside while you prepare the batter. If using frozen blueberries, do not thaw them first.
  2. Melt the butter
    • Place butter in a baking dish and let it melt in the oven preheated to 350°F.
  3. Make the cobbler batter
    • While the butter is melting, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add milk and vanilla, then whisk until smooth.
  4. Add the batter to the pan
    • Carefully remove the baking dish with the melted butter from the oven. Pour the batter evenly over the melted butter. Do not stir. The magic happens in the oven. As it bakes, the batter rises around the blueberries to create a soft, cake-like topping.
  5. Add the blueberries
    • Spoon the blueberries evenly over the batter. Sprinkle coarse sugar over the top.
  6. Bake
    • Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean.
  7. Cool and serve
    • Let the cobbler cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.

Can You Use Frozen Blueberries for Cobbler?

Yes, you can use frozen blueberries for cobbler, and there’s no need to thaw them first. Frozen blueberries work just as well as fresh, though they may release a little more juice, making the filling slightly more jammy. You may need to add about 15 extra minutes to the baking time.

If you enjoy baking with blueberries, you might also like my lemon blueberry muffins, which work just as well with fresh or frozen blueberries.

Pro Tips for the Best Blueberry Cobbler

  • Don’t stir the batter – once you pour it over the melted butter, leave it as is. As it bakes, the batter rises around the blueberries and creates a soft, cake-like topping.
  • Use an 8×8 or 9×9-inch pan – this gives you a thicker cobbler with a soft texture and plenty of juicy filling in every bite.
  • Frozen blueberries work great – no need to thaw them first. They may release a little extra juice, which makes the filling more jammy.
  • Don’t add more berries, especially if using frozen. More fruit will increase baking time, and the cobbler might burn at the edges or stay underbaked in the center.
  • Adjust the sweetness if needed – taste your blueberries and add a little more sugar if they are too tart.
  • Add lemon zest for extra flavor – if you love a hint of citrus, mix a little lemon zest into the blueberries and sugar before baking.
  • Bake until the center is set – the top should be golden and the center just set. If it still looks very wet, give it a few more minutes.
  • Cover with foil if needed – if the edges start to brown too quickly, loosely cover the dish with foil, especially when using frozen blueberries, since they may require a longer baking time.

How to Store Blueberry Cobbler

Let the cobbler cool completely, then cover it tightly and store it at room temperature for up to 1 day or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

To reheat, warm individual portions in the microwave or reheat the whole dish in the oven at 300°F until heated through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I double this blueberry cobbler recipe?

Yes, you can double the recipe and bake it in a 9×13-inch pan to feed a crowd. It will need 10-15 more minutes to bake.

Why is my cobbler soggy in the center?

This usually happens if the cobbler is underbaked or if too much fruit is added. Make sure to bake until the center is just set, and the top is golden brown. If needed, cover loosely with foil and bake a few minutes longer.

What other fruits can I use besides blueberries?

This cobbler base works well with other fruits, especially peaches, for a classic version; try my Easy Peach Cobbler with Canned Peaches for an easy, year-round option. You can also use strawberries for a lighter, summery twist; see my strawberry cobbler for more details.

Description

Easy blueberry cobbler recipe with fresh or frozen blueberries and simple ingredients. A soft and buttery cobbler everyone loves!

Ingredients

For Blueberries:

  • 2 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • grated lemon zest-optional

For Cobbler Batter:

  • 5 Tablespoons (75g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • coarse sugar for sprinkling on top

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare an 8×8 or 9×9-inch baking dish.

Prepare the blueberries:

  1. In a bowl, toss the blueberries with sugar and set aside while you prepare the batter. If using frozen blueberries, do not thaw them first.
  2. Place 5 tablespoons of butter in the baking dish and set it in the oven for 5–10 minutes, until the butter has completely melted.

Prepare the batter:

  1. Meanwhile, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add milk and whisk until smooth.
  2. Carefully remove the baking dish from the oven and pour the batter evenly over the melted butter. Do not stir.
  3. Spoon the blueberries evenly over the batter and sprinkle coarse sugar on top.
  4. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean. If using a 9×9-inch pan, the baking time may be 5–10 minutes shorter.
  5. Let the cobbler cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.
  6. Store at room temperature for up to 1 day or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  7. To reheat, warm individual portions in the microwave or reheat the whole dish in the oven at 300°F until heated through.

Notes

If using frozen blueberries, no need to thaw them first. If your blueberries are clumped together with ice, rinse them briefly under cold water, drain well, and continue with the recipe. Optionally, you can mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch into the sugar used with frozen blueberries. You may also need to add 10–15 extra minutes to the baking time when using frozen blueberries.

Do not stir the batter into the melted butter. The magic happens in the oven— as it bakes, the batter rises around the blueberries to create a soft, cake-like topping.

It’s normal if some butter rises to the top, but it will absorb as the cobbler bakes.
