Ingredients for Blackberry Cobbler

Ingredients for easy blackberry cobbler including blackberries, sugar, self-rising flour, milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
You only need a few simple ingredients to make this easy blackberry cobbler: blackberries, sugar, self-rising flour, milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
Blackberry cobbler batter mixed in a glass bowl with a whisk and frozen blackberries beside it.
Mix the cobbler batter until smooth, then pour it into the prepared baking dish and scatter the blackberries over the top.

You only need 5 simple ingredients to make this easy blackberry cobbler:

  • Blackberries – fresh blackberries are perfect when they’re in season, but frozen blackberries work well, too. If using frozen berries, do not thaw them first.
  • Sugar – sweetens the blackberries and the cobbler batter. If your blackberries are very tart, you can add a little extra sugar.
  • Self-rising flour – keeps this recipe simple because it already contains the leavening and salt needed for the batter.
  • Milk – helps create a smooth, pourable batter that bakes up soft and cake-like.
  • Butter – melted in the baking dish for rich flavor and golden, buttery edges.

If you don’t have self-rising flour, use 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in place of 1 cup self-rising flour.

How to Make Blackberry Cobbler

Step-by-step blackberry cobbler assembly showing batter in baking dish, blackberries added on top, and sugar sprinkled over the berries.
Assemble the blackberry cobbler by pouring in the batter, adding the blackberries, and sprinkling sugar over the top before baking.

This blackberry cobbler comes together in just a few simple steps.

  • First, lightly grease a 9-inch square baking dish, 9-inch round baking dish, or similar 2-quart baking dish.
  • Mix the self-rising flour, sugar, and milk in a bowl, then stir in the melted butter until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared dish, scatter the blackberries over the top, and sprinkle with the remaining sugar.
  • Bake until the cobbler is golden, set around the edges, and bubbling with juicy blackberries. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving warm with vanilla ice cream.

Can I Use Frozen Blackberries?

Yes, frozen blackberries work well in this cobbler. Use them straight from the freezer and do not thaw them first. If the berries are icy or clumped together, rinse them briefly under cold water, drain well, and continue with the recipe.

Frozen blackberries may release a little more juice as they bake, so the cobbler can turn out slightly more jammy. If needed, add a few extra minutes to the baking time, and bake until the center is set and the berries are bubbling

Tips for the Best Blackberry Cobbler

  • Use the right-size baking dish – a 9-inch square dish, a 10-inch round dish, or a similar 2-quart baking dish works best. If the dish is too large, the cobbler will be thinner and may bake faster.
  • Do not overmix the batter – stir just until the batter is smooth and combined.
  • Spread the berries evenly – scatter the blackberries over the batter so every serving has plenty of juicy fruit.
  • Sprinkle sugar over the top – this helps sweeten the berries and gives the top a lightly crisp, sweet finish.
  • Adjust for tart berries – blackberries can vary in sweetness, so if yours are very tart, add an extra tablespoon or two of sugar.
  • Bake until the center is set – the edges should be golden, the berries should be bubbling, and the center should not look like raw batter.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving – the filling will thicken a bit as it cools, but the cobbler is still best served warm.

Easy Fruit Cobbler Variations

This simple cobbler batter works beautifully with other fruits, too. If you love classic fruit cobblers, try my Super Easy Peach Cobbler made with canned peaches for an easy year-round dessert.

For more berry versions, my Easy Blueberry Cobbler and Easy Strawberry Cobbler are both simple, cozy, and perfect served warm with vanilla ice cream.

You can also use mixed berries, raspberries, or Easy Cherry Cobbler with this same idea, but keep in mind that juicier fruit may need a few extra minutes in the oven.

How to Store Blackberry Cobbler

Let the cobbler cool completely, then cover it tightly and store it at room temperature for up to 1 day or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

To reheat, warm individual portions in the microwave, or reheat the whole dish in the oven at 300°F until heated through. Blackberry cobbler is best served warm, especially with vanilla ice cream.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to make an old-fashioned blackberry cobbler?

Old-fashioned blackberry cobbler is made with simple ingredients, juicy blackberries, and a homemade batter that bakes up golden and buttery. This version is quick and easy because the batter is mixed in one bowl, poured into the baking dish, topped with blackberries and sugar, and baked until bubbly.

What is the secret to a good cobbler?

The secret to a good cobbler is using enough fruit, not overmixing the batter, and baking until the center is set. The edges should be golden and the blackberries should be bubbling, but the middle should not look wet or like raw batter.

How do I make a quick and easy blackberry cobbler?

To make a quick and easy blackberry cobbler, mix self-rising flour, sugar, milk, and melted butter into a simple batter. Pour it into a greased baking dish, scatter blackberries on top, sprinkle with sugar, and bake until golden and bubbly.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when making berry cobbler?

The most common mistakes are using a baking dish that is too large, adding too much fruit, underbaking the center, or using frozen berries with too much ice on them. For the best texture, measure the berries, drain off any excess ice if using frozen berries, and bake until the cobbler is fully set in the center

Can I make blackberry cobbler without self-rising flour?

Yes. If you don’t have self-rising flour, use 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in place of 1 cup self-rising flour.

Can I use frozen blackberries for cobbler?

Yes, frozen blackberries work well in this cobbler. Do not thaw them first. If they are icy or clumped together, rinse them briefly under cold water, drain well, and continue with the recipe. Frozen berries may release more juice, so the cobbler may need a few extra minutes in the oven.

I love blackberry cobbler! However, my grandmother spoiled our whole family. She made the with just the juice! Seedless cobbler-which makes it a little tricky. I’m sure your recipe is delicious, if you don’t mind the seeds! Lol
